Happy New Year! I know you probably thinking I am late in greeting and in sending you this newsletter! But, wait, we have not passed Chinese New Year, yet!  Greetings to you for a prosperous year, the year of the rabbit, starting February 3rd!

A quick side note of the Chinese Zodiac signs. If you were born in 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, then you are a rabbit. This is what it describes of you: You enjoy being surrounded by family and friends, you’re popular, compassionate, sincere, and you like to avoid conflict. Hey, I am a rabbit! Are you? Okay, let me get back to what I would like to share with you today.

Foods for Healthy You and Healthy Skin

Everyone has a New Year resolution. What is yours? Is eating right one of it? Like how water and fertilizer is to the health of a plant, how our body performs, our brain function and our skin looks, is really correlated with the quality and quantity of the foods we put into our body.

My last issue talked about arming our diet with Antioxidants for great skin. They are of course essential for a healthy you. It’s the new buzz words for good nutrition and good skin care. But, just what is antioxidant?

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients that can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when our body cells use oxygen, or by environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and UV radiation. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals. Health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer, etc are all contributed by oxidative damage. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense and therefore lower the risk of cancer and infection. Antioxidants are also important to great skin, because they slow down and may prevent — the harm done to our body by free radicals. Free radical damage is one reason behind signs of aging, like wrinkles and dry skin.

So how do I find these foods and how to incorporate them into my diet?

Now, do a quick assessment! How do you do as far as having some of these foods in your diet? A suggestion for you is to print out these slides, stick them on the refrigerator and gradually add some of them into your diet.
